Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems, Communities, and Indicator Species: Confusing Concepts for Conservation of Seamounts

چکیده
The concept of “vulnerable marine ecosystem” (VME) was included in United Nations (UN) General Assembly Resolution 61/105 as part an international effort to minimize the effects seafloor fisheries on high seas. However, defining a VME left be developed by technical guidance UN Food and Agricultural Organization. In that venue certain categories organisms were deemed indicator species, suggesting areas with those species would considered VMEs subsequent management measures implemented conserve ecosystem attributes. We note seamounts can distributed widely, dense clusters or sparsely. A cluster, for example, scleractinian corals sponges, is most often referred VME, but we argue any such cluster not ecosystem, rather it community, likely one many make up ecosystem. Other communities seamount are could include small (some yet discovered) who also because they web interactions flow materials/energy seamount. suggest might extend over several biogeographic area. conclude term “ecosystem” outlined needs re-evaluated from classical ecological perspective leading spatial approaches better address ecologically relevant space time scales.

Coastal ecosystems of Bushehr are shallow environments subject to human impacts, including shrimp aquaculture and urban expansion activities. A spatial-temporal study was conducted in order to assess the actual ecological status of the creeks, estuary and marine sites on the basis of their taxonomic composition and density of mesozooplankton. Zooplankton species distribution and abundance data ...

1. The spatial distribution of the most important subtidal habitats (coral reefs, coral carpets, seagrass meadows, sand with corals, macroids, mud, hardgrounds) and mangroves was mapped in northern Safaga Bay, Red Sea, Egypt. Coral communities were analysed separately for their ecological and spatial patterns. This, coupled with information about major current patterns in the bay, provides a fr...
